Skin afflictions that can lead to a period of quarantine is a topic of this parasha. The cause of these afflictions, according to tradition, is antisocial behavior and in quarantine we reflect on our social interaction. The verse tells us On the day exposed flesh is seen in it, he shall be unclean and on the dayteaches that on some days – holidays – the priests do not evaluate the affliction. Rabbi S. R. Hirsch explains that the festivals are social occasions; they’re an opportunity to repent for antisocial behavior and hopefully afterwards there will be no more need for isolation. Sadly, although we celebrated Pesach in isolation, we are still waiting to return to communal prayer. And when we finally do return, we will do so with greater joy and friendship.
