After we read about the splitting of the sea, we are told: “If you really heed the voice of the LORD your God, and do what is right in His eyes, and hearken to His commands and keep all His statutes, all the sickness that I put upon Egypt I will not put upon you, for I am the LORD your healer.” James Kugel points out that the times we are living through suggest otherwise. He explains that those who recover from illness recite the gomel blessing because our first instinct is to thank the human who returned us to “normal life.” This blessing reminds us that escaping sickness should not be greeted as a return to “normal life” for perhaps “that sort of normality always was an illusion.”
