Who led the way into the sea? The tribe of Judah and this is why the monarchy belongs to their tribe – so says a popular Midrash. And yet another Midrash offers a competing story. At the sea, first Moses instructed the oldest tribe of Reuben to jump but they refused. And so he turns to the next tribe of Simeon and they also refuse. The tribe of Benjamin loses patience and leaps into the sea. Upon seeing this unauthorized behavior, the tribe of Judah begins to stone them and at that moment, says the Midrash, God awarded them the monarchy. It is not Judah’s willingness to leap into the sea that wins them the kingdom but their commitment to Moses – the current leader – and his procedures.
