Rashi famously explains that Jacob prepared to meet his brother in three different ways: he sent gifts, he prepared for war, and he prayed. The Shema calls us, explains the Sfat Emet, to do the same. “And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your being and with all your might.” All your heart? This refers to worship of the heart – prayer; all your being – this refers to the war against oneself; all your might – this refers to physical possessions that we must sometimes relinquish.
