The Book of Vayikra opens with the various sacrifices that are offered. Many commentators draw a parallel to the sacrifices of Cain and Abel: Cain brought from the fruit of the soil an offering to the LORD. And Abel too had brought from the choice firstlings of his flock…Unlike Cain, Abel brought “from the choice” – the best he had to offer. However, it was only after he saw Cain’s example that he too was brought offering. R. Yaacov Yosef of Polonne explains that there is no need to copy others for God wants our unique gifts: ‘Should any person from you bring forward to the LORD an offering…from you bring forward – there is no need to copy others.
