Jacob took one of the stones of the place and put it at his head and he lay down in that place, and he dreamed... The symbolism is powerful, Jacob gathers hard stones, lays his head on them and dreams a dream. The hard stones – the harsh reality of Jacob’s life – give birth to a dream. Two thousand years ago our tradition taught that this dream foretold the rise, fall and rise of the Jewish people. Today we know that this dream is anchored in the harsh historical experience of the Jewish people whose collective life unfolds according to God’s plan.
