Before Sodom is destroyed, we read: And the LORD had thought, “Shall I conceal from Abraham what I am about to do? Why did God reveal to Abraham His plan to destroy Sodom? Rashi explains that the answer lies in the next verse: For Abraham will surely be a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed through him. Abraham is the father of many nations – they are his people – and as such, it is not right for God to take action without informing him. Sforno sees this as a teaching moment – God waits on us to repent and believes that the righteous can wield influence. It is this lesson that God wants Abraham to convey and it is the blessing Abraham brings to all the nations of the earth.
