Our Parasha opens with the words: Moses went and spoke…Where did Moshe go? To answer this question, the Ba'al HaTurim looks to the previous verse:… to dwell on the soil which the LORD your God swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob… Moshe was about to pass away and soon he would give an account to the previous generations to "Abraham, Isaac and Jacob." This is not only true for Moses but it is true for every one of us. As Jews we are responsible for our living community and its future. But we are also answerable to our past, and the High Holiday remind us from where we are coming, and to where we are going, and before Whom we will need to give a reckoning.
