God instructs the prophets: Comfort, O comfort My people, says your God. Telling them: Speak to the heart of Jerusalem and call out to her, for her term of service is ended, her crime is expiated, for she has taken from the LORD’s hand double for all her offenses. Many readings – including the King James Bible and Artscroll – understand that God is instructing the prophets what to say. According to them, the clause that follows call out to her is the message to be shared. Arnold Ehrlich thinks this is incorrect. When Moses descends Mt Sinai, his face aglow, the people were afraid to come hear him. And Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the chiefs in the community came back to him…(Exodus 34).The mere fact that Moses called out to the people reduced their fear. Similarly in our Haftara, the comfort is in just calling out to the people. The clause that follows call out to her is an explanation for the comforters and not meant to be shared with the comforted.
