Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God commanded you…The Ten Commandments appear twice in the Torah, once in Shmot and once in Devarim. Unlike the first occasion, this time we are instructed to respect our parents “as the LORD your God commanded you.” When they sojourned in the desert for forty years, God supplied the people with food (via the manna) and shelter (via the clouds of glory). The Meshech Chochma explains: since food and shelter are parental responsibilities, God stressed that even when parents don’t supply these basic needs, we must still respect them as the LORD your God commanded you.
