And there was a famine in the land besides the former famine that was in the days of Abraham…and the LORD appeared unto Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt…” What’s the point of mentioning the famine in the days of Abraham? During his famine, Abraham left for Egypt and returned from there a wealthy man “And Abram was heavily laden with cattle, with silver and gold.” Isaac believed, Ramban explains, that the same would happen to him. Therefore, God instructs him not to go to Egypt but also assured him that he will still enjoy greatness. Indeed, it is not our plans and thoughts that lead to success but God’s blessing.
