When famine hits, Abraham is forced to leave the promised land and go to Egypt. Isaac faces the same situation but God tells him: Do not go down to Egypt. Stay in the land that I appoint to you. Sojourn in this land so that I may be with you and bless you…Malbim explains that Abraham arrived at faith through reason and therefore God repeatedly – our Sages say ten times – tested him. Being forced to leave the promised land was one of those tests. Isaac was raised in the faith. The purpose of the famine was not to test his faith but to demonstrate the Divine providence that rests on those who have faith – and so despite the famine, he is told: Sojourn in this land so that I may be with you and bless you.
