You shall take for yourself on the first day a fruit…After the High Holidays, comes the festival of sukkot when we bring together four species that resemble four parts of the body. The lulav-palm is likened to the spine, the etrog-citron fruit to the heart, the hadasim-myrtle to the eyes and the aravot-willow to the lips. A person can, over the year, become bifurcated or even splinter into many directions. The heart is in one place and the eyes are somewhere else or the lips are saying one thing while the brain is sending a different message down the spinal cord. Over the High Holidays, we stand before God and gather ourselves back together. Cometh sukkot, the human being becomes unified once more: you shall take for yourself on the first day… you shall take yourself on the first day!
