Tevye famously sings about the power of Tradition, but in the end, it fails him. We are told that when the king sits on his throne of kingship, he shall write for himself a copy of this Torah. A Torah scroll the king inherits from previous generations, the Rabbis teach, is not enough for he must write for himself a scroll. Monarchies are things of tradition and they continue on that basis. Judaism does not work that way, we inherit a Tradition but we then must find a way for us and the next generation to engage with it.
