Parashat Shelach opens with God permitting Moshe to send spies to scout the Promised Land and it ends with the third and last paragraph of the Shema which instruct and you shall not stray after your heart and after your eyes. Rashi points to a symmetry between the beginning and the end of the parasha. On the communal level, the Children of Israel were led astray by their spies, so too it is possible for an individual’s eyes and heart to lead them astray. Where we go, and what we see while we are there, always affects us.
