Mahlah, Noa,Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah… stood before Moses…saying, “Our father died…and he was not part of the community…of Korah, for through his own offense he died, and he had no sons. Why should our father’s name be withdrawn from the midst of his clan because he had no son? Give us a holding in the midst of our father’s brothers.” And Moses brought forward their case before the LORD. The commentators struggle why Moses could not answer this question directly. An explanation recorded in the name of the Shelah HaKadosh is that since Mahlah, Noa, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah mentioned their father was not part of Korah’s rebellion against Moses, Moses felt he could not be objective. Therefore he recused himself from answering this question and brought forward their case before the LORD.
