This week's Haftara predicts: From the north disaster shall break loose…In the north was the Babylonian empire that eventually destroyed Jerusalem. The Zohar connects this verse to the practice of slaughtering sacrifices in the Temple's north – the sacrifice was offered to God but it was slaughtered north of the altar from where "disaster shall break loose." Quoting the book of Proverbs, If your foe is hungry, feed him bread, and if he thirsts, give him water. It teaches that sometimes the best way to deal with "the other side" is to give them something. Babylon is no more, and no longer do we offer sacrifices, yet this lesson is eternal.
