Will our planet last forever? Medievals on both sides of this question appealed to this verse and Maimonides devoted a chapter of The Guide for the Perplexed to expounding it:

“And God said I will not again strike down all living things…as long as all the days of the earth seedtime and harvest / and cold and heat / and summer and winter / and day and night / shall not cease.”

The verse portrays an endless cycle of work “seedtime and harvest / shall not cease” and the Netziv believed that when there is an endless cycle of work, people simply don’t have the time for sin. This prompted God to promise “I will not again strike down all living things.”
