Starting the first Shabbat after the 9th of Av (that marks the destruction of the Temple), we read seven Haftarot of consolation, the last of which is read this Shabbat – the Shabbat before Rosh HaShana. It remarks: For the sake of Zion I will not be silent, for the sake of Jerusalem I will not sit still… The suggests that although the Haftarot of consolation are ending, the ideas that animate them will continue. There is some debate whether this is God’s promise to us or our commitment to God. Indeed, we do not remain silent for we end the Yom Kippur service with the song Next Year in Jerusalem and many have the good fortune to not sit still but travel to Israel for the High Holidays and Sukkot.
