And you shall turn back to the LORD your God…For this command which I charge you today is…very close to you, in your mouth and in your heart, to do it. Always read the Shabbat before Rosh HaShana, these verses refer to Teshuva, the commandment to return to God and indeed all the steps of repentance are hinted to here. First is in your mouth – confessing one's sin; then comes in your heart – regretting the past; and lastly, to do it – resolving to improve our behavior in the future. The Torah is telling us that with these three steps, Teshuva can be very close to you.
