The opening of this week’s parasha describes how the Levites transported the Tabernacle. Before they were moved, the sacred items were covered and it was the Priests – not the Levites – who did this: Aaron, and his sons, shall finish covering the tabernacle and all the vessels of the tabernacle when the camp journeys onward. We cover holy items not only to protect them, explains Rabbi David Silber, but because that which is sacred should be covered. For this reason the Torah insists that the Priests, and not the Levites, be the ones to cover the Tabernacle and its vessels.
