Samson’s parents had trouble conceiving. An angel appears and promises them a child. Upon hearing the angel’s promise, Samson’s father tells him What is your name? When your word comes true, we shall honour you. The angel replies Why do you ask my name when it is a mystery. What is the mystery? When Jacob struggles with his angel and asks for his name, the angel refuses to reveal it and a similar phrase is used. Rabbeinu Bahya explains that human beings crave honour and recognition but angels have no such need. For us the ability to live anonymously will always be a bit of mystery – true anonymity belongs to the angels – human beings need some measure of honour and recognition.
