Judah said, “…Here we are, slaves to my lord, both we and the one in whose hand the goblet was found.” And Joseph said, “Far be it from me to do this! The man in whose hand the goblet was found, he shall become my slave, and you, go up in peace to your father.” Ramban explains that by not agreeing to take all the brothers as slaves, Joseph taught his brothers a moral lesson about collective punishment: it is wrong to punish a group of people because of the misdeeds of one of them.
