How to light the Menorah? The Talmud offers three kosher options. The basic option is that all eight nights of Hannukah, each household lights only one candle. One level up is that every night, each member of the household lights just one candle. And the best option is to light candles according to the number of nights – so on the fourth night, everyone would light four candles. For some reason, the Shulhan Aruch, Code of Jewish Law, skips the first options and codifies only the best option. Perhaps it wants us to know that even in the darkest of times, we should not stop striving to be our best.
