And Jacob said, “Look, I have heard that there are provisions in Egypt. Go down there, and get us provisions from there that we may live and not die.” There is a redundancy in this verse we may live and not die – obviously, if they live then they won’t die! Explains the Ohr HaHayim, Jacob was instructing his sons to do their utmost to survive in this world otherwise they will be asked to give a reckoning in the world-to-come. And so he told them get us provisions from there that we may live in this world and not die in the world-to-come when we can’t explain why we didn’t try harder.
