Some talmudical analysis of Hanuka can illuminate the relationship between the individual and their home. The Talmud describes the Hanuka mitzvah as “a candle per person and their house.” The expression “their house” is ambiguous. The Rambam understands that similar to mezuzah, the obligation is on “the physical house.” Rashi explains that the obligation rests not on the house but on “the members of the household.” If so, how does Rashi understand the obligation to light at home? The Pnei Yehoshua explains that publicising the miracle is part of the mitzvah and this is best done from our homes, which always shares a border with a public space. In other words, the obligation is on the individual but s/he discharges that obligation through the home.
