The one whose house it is shall come and tell the priest, saying, ‘Something like an affliction has appeared to me in the house.’ God guides whatever happens to us, good and otherwise. Our belongings are but an extension of who we are and so the verse specifies affliction has appeared to me in the house for the affliction is less about the house and more about who we are. And that’s why, the Alshikh explains, the words “appeared to me” are adjacent to the word “affliction” and before the word “house.” When something happens to our belongings, we need to also examine ourselves.
