For I am the LORD-I have not changed; and you are the children of Jacob-you have not ceased to be. This haunting verse from ourHaftara is used to point to the eternal nature of the Jewish people – we will live forever. Supported by the ancient Aramaic translation of the verse, Rashi understands it to be talking about the eternal life of each individual: each individual lives forever. Indeed, the idea of an eternal people is only meaningful and significant, when it is made up of individuals who believe in life eternal.
