…and Terah died in Haran. And the LORD said to Abrahm, “Go forth from your land and your birthplace and your father’s house…” According to the Torah’s narrative, first Abraham’s father passed away and only then was he commanded to leave his home. In the Midrash, R. Yitzchak imagines that Abraham was commanded to leave while his father was still alive and he responded to God that it would look badly if he left his elderly father to follow the word of God. God agreed and so it was that Abraham did not heed God’s command until after his father passed away.
