After Abraham rescues his nephew Lot, we read: After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Fear not Abram I am your shield…” Citing this verse, Maimonides argued that God’s providence over human beings is a function of their righteousness. Since Abraham was willing to endanger himself to save his nephew, God increases His providence over Abraham, assuring him: Fear not Abram, I am your shield.
