Who is a hero? One Hebrew word, gibor, describes strength, heroism and courage. It appears in the fourth chapter of Pirkei Avot that we study this week: “Who is a “gibor”? One who controls his impulses, as it says: “Better one who is slow to anger than one who is mighty… (Proverbs 16:32)” This teaches us that there are many ways to be strong. The hero is not necessarily the person who is physically strongest, but the one who has the courage to be patient; the Torah teaches that such a person is a hero.
