And it happened at the end of forty days and forty nights, the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the Covenant. First the people heard the commandments but it took forty days for them to receive a written copy. R. Hirsch explains that although the people immediately committed themselves to the commandments, they weren’t yet ready to keep them – they needed time to process and prepare for this commitment. Too often we live in these “forty days” between committing to something and doing it. However, sometimes we forget that these “forty days” are meant to be a finite and intermediate period, during which we’re supposed to prepare ourselves for something new.
