“Moses tells the people: Hear, Israel, you are about to cross the Jordan…The Ohr HaHayim focuses on verse’s opening phrase, Hear, Israel (Shema Yisrael), which is also used in our declaration of faith. He explains that Moses was telling the people to actively listen to what he was telling them: you – only you, and not me – are about to cross the Jordan. Moses was asking the people to beseech God to allow him to cross the Jordan along with them. Sometimes someone needs something, but they don’t have the ability or the courage to fully express themselves. Our task is Shema Yisrael – to actively listen to what they are trying to tell us.
