The snake incited Eve and Adam and therefore when the people incite in the desert, snakes are sent to chasten them. This is what the Rabbis mean when they say it’s not the snake that’s fatal but sin. Our suffering and discomfort belong to us. Only by recognizing this fact and taking ownership of it, do we stand a chance of breaking free from its grip.
