And the community had no water, and they assembled against Moses and against Aaron. And the people disputed with Moses…And Moses, and Aaron with him, came away from the assembly…Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly in front of the rock…Why the assembling and reassembling of the people? The Midrash imagines that Moses and the people argued, with each thinking they should be the one to choose the rock destined to provide water, and rallying around it. This portrayal adds to the infamy of this episode. Sometimes there is a real crisis and instead of dealing with what is truly important – in this case, providing water – we get stuck over things that really aren’t so important at all.
