Dog owners are famous for trusting their hound’s instincts. During the final plague God promised that “against the Israelites no dog will snarl…so that you may know how the LORD sets apart Egypt and Israel.” Quoting the Talmud, the Netziv suggests that dogs have a certain spiritual sensibility and can discern the character of a person. The dogs knew that not every Israelite was worthy, yet they did not give them up; not wanting to disturb God’s plan to set Israel apart, they remained silent. Indeed, not everything that one knows must always be said.
