The word “az” mean “then” or “next” and it appears twice in the Song at the Sea. The first time it is followed by the joy of Moses: Then did Moses sing, and all the Israelites with him but the second time it is followed by confusion: Then were the chieftains of Edom confounded. Life is one long chain of events, with one thing following the other, something happens and “then” something else happens. Moses teaches us to have an optimistic outlook – to believe that joy and song is waiting for us in the future. Indeed, this is the disposition of one who lives a life of faith in God and trust in His benevolence.
