Abel became a herder of sheep while Cain was a tiller of the soil. Abel became a herder whereas Cain was a tiller. For Cain, work defined him – it was his identity. When the fruit of Cain’s labor was rejected, he took it personally because in his mind, there was no space between who he was and what he did for a living.  For work we may become all manner of things, but it is important to remember that they do not have the power to define who we actually are.
