If you go by My statutes and protect My commands and do them… The Midrash contrasts protecting the commandments with actually doing them. It says: if you protect my Torah then it will be as if you performed the commandments. This statement speaks inclusively to the kaleidoscope of Jewish commitment and observance. What does it mean to protect the Torah? Rashi says it means vigorous study of the commands with the purpose of performing them. Protecting the Torah also includes protecting the viewpoint of the Torah and facilitating other people to observe it properly. We each have a role in protecting the Torah and performing the commandments.
