One of God’s names is El and in declining to curse the Jewish people, Bilam says What can I curse that El has not cursed, and what can I doom that the LORD has not doomed? The Midrash explains that God connected His name with the Jewish people: Isra-El. Bilam was telling Balak that because of this he can’t curse the Jewish people for to do so is akin to cursing God. The Midrash adds that when God foresaw that the Jewish people would barely stand a chance at surviving, He attached His name to them to indicate and ensure that just as He is eternal so to will His people be eternal.
