When Balak, King of Moab, first describes Israel, he does not mention their name. Instead he says: Look, a people has come out of Egypt…Did he not know their name? The people of Moab were descendants of Abraham’s nephew, Lot. On more than one occasion Abraham had saved Lot – and now the descendants of Lot wanted to wipe out the descendants of Abraham. The only way to do this, explains the Ramban, is to pretend ignorance and forget old ties. A genocide starts with pretending not to know.
